Vast forests provide enough wood for sawmills, furniture and paper industry of Slovenia. License agreements between local factories and producers from the Western Europe has recently enabled the production of various types of personal cars and lorries, motorcycles and fridges.
In the past Slovenia was a part of Roman Empire and Austria-Hungaria until 1918, when the monarchy came to an end and Slovenia together with Croatia and Serbia established the union with the name of The Kingdom of Serbians, Croatians and Slovenians. The alliance was formed in 1929 called Yugoslavia. According to GDP it is the most developed country form the former Eastern Block (GDP per inhabitant is higher by approximately a half than in Slovakia and by only a quarter lower than in Greece. The average growth of GDP is 7 %. From the national point of view there does not exist a numerous minority and the majority of population is formed by Slovenians who came to the area in 6th century AD and belonged to so called Southern Slavs.
Slovenia gained the independence in 1991. In its mountains there are rich deposits of ores (ferrous, lead and zinc ores). Electricity is produced by thermal power plants (black coal) and water power plants using the big energetic potential of the rivers in Slovenia. The most important industrial sectors are the metallurgy of ferrous metals, mechanical engineering (means of transport, tools, appliances) and textile industry. Exported goods achieve a high quality thanks to the developed technology and qualified workforce. Breeding of livestock, especially cattle, has the leading role in agriculture. Cereals, potatoes and sugar beet are particularly cultivated on arable land. Forestry and wood production are also significant. Wood is processed by furniture industry. Furniture is an important export article. The potential of the country in terms of tourism lies in agreeable sea and mountain resorts. Visitors are also attracted by karst formations (caves Postojna and Skocjan)
