Economy: Latvia has almost no raw materials. They extract turf, sand, clay and limestone. Then it is amber, which is washed up by sea to the coast and which is used for the production of jewellery and other decorations in combination with silver and gold, too.

Industry: when Latvia belonged to the USSR, in Riga, Daugavpils and Lijepaji there were big

machinery plants founded, which produced ships, wagons, microbuses, motorcycles as well as electrotechnical plants for the production of radios, telephone and electrical equipment for cars.

The chemical industry was developed, too. In the port of Lijepaji there is the biggest metallurgical plant in the whole Baltics. After the break-up of the USSR there were problems with raw materials as well as outdated technology, so wood and textile industries started to develop.
