and finances. In Rome high-end technology is produced, banking is also advanced and there is a lot of tourism.
Automotive industry is in Torino, Bologna and Brescia. There is metallurgy and textile industry in Genoa and chemical industry in Cagliari.
Population
The majority of population lives in the North of the country, mainly in the area of the Po river which is populated by more than 25 million inhabitants. A large part of population of this region has a high standard of living. The South of Italy has rather rural character. The cities are smaller and the life is harder. The highest number of inhabitant per 1 km² – more than 200 is in the area from Milan, Venice to Bologna, Ancona on the East, from Genoa to Florence on the West, around Rome, Naples, Bari and Tarento on the North, Palermo, Catania and Messina in Sicily. The rural population in Italy represent 31 % of inhabitants, urban population is 63.5 %; Naples has 1.2 %, Rome 2.8 % and Milan 1.5 %.
