Transport network
In Switzerland there is a well developed network of road and railway transport. Roads are know by their quality, not only highways but also regional roads of lower categories. There is a regular bus connection to almost every Alpine village. Roads go on bridges but even through numerous tunnels. Their number is possibly the highest in the whole Europe. Rail transport is known by its comfortableness, speed and especially by its preciseness. The trip by well known Alpine expresses is an unforgettable experience. Passenger ships as local transport can be seen on many large lakes.
Economy
Switzerland is a prosperous, stable and modern market economy with GDP that is higher than the GDP of big West-European countries. Switzerland was the richest European state with a significant advantage for the long period of 20th century. However since the beginning of 1990´s its growth has slowed down so that in 2005 it fell to the fourth place among the European countries with the population of one million in terms of GDP per an inhabitant in PKS, after Ireland, Denmark and Norway. Switzerland is the member of EFTA.
Swiss culture was formed on the boundary of surrounding cultural areas that affected it. An independent culture has developed in time. Sometimes it is difficult to talk about the homogeneous Swiss culture, because it divides itself according to language areas.
The interaction with France, Germany and Italy is typical for the country. Many Swiss artists are considered in those countries to be their own artists. It was the Church who created cultural sights in the country. Later they were townsmen and patriciate, since the country was not governed by feudal lords on the contrary to the rest of Europe. The support was mainly provided to construction (Roman cathedral in Bern, Sion, Chur, Geneva, the Gothic cathedral in Lausanne, Renaissance’s churches in Ticin or town halls in Lucerne, Soluthurne and Brig, Baroque monasteries in Einsiede and St. Gallen), foreign builders, built beautiful city centres such as Bern, Freiburg, Lucerne or St. Gallen.
