Economy
Gross domestic product of Lithuania was 45.23 billions dollars in 2004. It consisted of industry 33.4 %, agriculture 6.1 % and services 60.5 %. It is 12,500 USD per person in average. Industry and production were influenced by the Soviet pattern a lot. They were built up according to it. After the break-up of the Soviet Union the industry experienced the biggest boom. Main industrial sectors are food production, petrochemical industry and textile industry. There are only the few original sources of raw materials in Lithuania. However, there are small resources of oil and natural gas. Limestone, dolomite, clay, sand and grit are extracted. The sources of turf are also used. Dolomite is annually extracted the most – approximately 2 millions tons. Then it is sand with almost
950,000 tons, limestone, turf and grit. Oil is extracted the least, because its sources are limited.
Kernavė – Lithuania is proud of its series of gracious and interesting 5 grassy hills; there are buildings and monuments are situated between them. They are covered by turf. The city on the list of UNESCO world heritage, is full of people in summer, when there are folk festivals.
The Hill of Crosses is situated near the city of Šiauliai, which is an important city of Lithuania. The Hill of Crosses is the symbol of fight of Lithuania against previous regimes. The first crosses were erected then in the 19th century in the
memory of the fallen in anti-Russian uprising. Nowadays there are more than 10,000 crosses erected and there is the statue of Christ standing among them. It was a gift by John Paul II.
